Manchester City Football Club is a professional football club in the UK that plays in the Premier League. It was founded back in 1880 and its initial name was St. Mark’s West Gorton. The name of the club came from St. Mark’s Church of England located in West Gordon, which had the initiative to form this particular football club due to the intervention of several of its members. This came as a result of the increasing social issues in the English communities back then, such as unemployment, alcoholism, and violence between various gangs. Thus, the church decided to form a few sports teams, like a cricket and a football team.

St. Mark’s West Gorton FC

On the 13th of November 1880, St. Mark’s West Gorton football team had its first official game with the Macclesfield Church’s football team. Unfortunately, West Gordon lost the game, as the score was 1-2 for Macclesfield. In 1884, West Gordon merged Gorton Athletic, another local football team. The merge took for a few months, but, eventually, West Gordon got the name of Gorton Association Football Club, while Gorton Athletic becomes West Gorton Athletic. Finally, in 1887, Gorton A.F.C became a professional football club and moved to the Hyde Road Stadium. This event led to another change in the club’s name, which was now Ardwick Association Football Club, in order to reflect the fact that the club moved to the east side of the city.

First Silverware

The first game of the team on the Hyde Road Stadium took place on the 10th of September, 1887, and it was against Salford A.F.C. In 1891, Ardwick A.F.C. manages to win its first Manchester Cup trophy. As a result, the team is allowed to enter the Football Alliance. Because Football Alliance merged with Football League, Ardwick A.F.C. becomes a co-founder of the Football League Second Division. On the 16th of 1894, this football team gets the name of Manchester City Football Club, becoming at the same time a registered company.

Most Success Times Until Recently

The most successful period of the club was at the late 60s and the beginning of the 70s. During this period the team won the championship, the Cup of England, and the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup. All of these trophies were won under the management of coaches Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison. Since the League Cup won in 1976, the team didn’t manage to win another important trophy. Moreover, the decline of this football club also meant that the team demoted twice from premier league in the 90s. In the ’98-’99 football season, the team ended up in the third league, for the first time in the history of the club.

In 2008, the football club was bought by a group of companies from Abu Dhabi, which invested large amounts of money in bringing new and better players to the team. More than 100 million pounds were spent in the summer of 2009 on transfers alone. Since 2003 and until present days, the football team plays on the City of Manchester Stadium.
